IndividualTeamCustomer

Customer success: accidental or intentional?

If you've been following this series, we have arrived at an important point.

We talked about Individual Success: understanding what you bring, and how that changes the way you show up for yourself and for others.

We talked about Team Success: how individual contributions compound, how gaps between people become opportunities rather than friction, and how teams show up not just for themselves but for the teams around them.

And now, last but not least: Customer Success.

How does it manifest?

  • A vehicle component that a customer forgets even exists because it never fails.
  • A customer who received their order on time, in full, with the expected quality.
  • A family sitting down to enjoy a pre-ordered, ready-to-cook meal on a busy weeknight.
  • A company empowered to make decisions because they can finally see their data in a dashboard.
  • A team that replaced paper forms with a system that knows where everything is.

None of these moments happen by accident.

Well, at least, they shouldn't.

They have to be and feel intentional.

In my case, in order to assess that, I ask myself four questions (before I eventually ask them to team members and compare notes):

  • How much of that result was the product of someone's heroism or going above and beyond attitude?
  • Was it luck, or was there a system designed to consistently deliver the best possible outcome?
  • Do all team members share a common understanding of what that best possible outcome actually looks like?
  • Are you using what each person is actually good at, and helping them grow in the process?
Customer success is the most visible layer of the cascade. It's what the world sees. But it's also the most honest signal you have about what's happening upstream.

And it's not just an outcome. It's information.

The question is whether your organization is designed to listen to it.

Let's see if this fits.
